Fieldtrip: Hanover Shoe Farms in Hanover, PA

Sunday April 15th – 1:00 departure Photo Fieldtrip to the Hanover Shoe Farms in Hanover, PA to photograph the horses, stables barns and details in the horse farm complex and orchard landscapes toward evening

 Revised 04/11/2012

On Sunday April 15th we will carpool and leave from the Arby’s parking lot at the Camp Hill Giant grocery store (our meeting site) at 1:00 PM.  It will take about 60 minutes to get to the site of the Hanover Shoe Farms in Hanover, PA.  For those of you coming from the Carlisle and points south we can meet you in Dillsburg in the back parking lot of Bakers Restaurant along Rt. 15  about 1:15.

The Camera Club had gone to this location once before, but that was back around 1998 I think.  I was on that trip and I recall photographing the barns, horse stalls, horses and fences but mostly making images of small details and the contrasts of light and shadow.  The barns and stalls are kept in immaculate condition.   You may get to take close-ups of the horses or the interaction of the staff with the horses.  If the weather holds up and time permits we will return up Route 94 and photograph in the orchards north of York Springs in the preferred later afternoon light.  Andy will be heading straight back to Camp Hill after photographing at Hanover Farms.  He needs to be back by 6:00.

I suggest that you bring the following water, comfortable shoes, extra batteries, a zoom lens for getting in tight or compressing distance, a wide angle lens, tripod, extra memory cards, gas and snack money.

If you are interested in going, be at the Arby’s side of the Giant parking lot by 1:00 PM.  It should be another different photo fieldtrip than the normal.  I expect challenging and changing lighting conditions throughout the day.   Think about photographs that will incorporate light and shadow as well as shooting small items or photographing more with a wide-angle lens. Below is a page from their website.  The web site is www.hanoverpa.com.  Any questions call Andrew Hoff 975-0630 or e-mail president@harrisburgcameraclub.org.

Visiting Hours

The farm is open to visits by the public, 7 days a week during daylight hours. All tours are self-guided. If you come between the hours of 8:00a.m.-4:00p.m. Monday-Sunday there may be someone around to answer some questions you may have regarding the farm and/or the horses.

We have 4 main barns which you may go through, 2 of the barns are our stallion barns and the other two house the mares and their foals.
The best time to see the mares and their foals up close is in the springtime.

Hanover Shoe Farms is located approximately 3 miles from the Hanover Square, halfway between Hanover and Littlestown on Route 194 South on the right hand side.
